He attended the US Army Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and the US Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia before joining the First Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany in 1997. While on active duty, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of Operation Joint Guard/Joint Forge to support the Dayton Peace Accords. He left active military service in 2000 and returned to the United States.

Sand Creek Animal Hospital, with the addition of Dr. Sonnekalb as a partner, slowly developed into the six doctor practice it is today.
